My New Guilty Pleasure is Pretty Little Liars SSHHH Don’t Tell!

So last week I was bored out of my mind and there was nothing on television. Channel surfing I landed on the ABC Family channel and caught the tale in of the show Pretty Little Liars. This is a show that I have seen once or twice. I liked it but never had the chance to see it again. I decided to watch it and found out that they were having a PLL marathon, three episodes and a box of peanut M&M’s later I was totally hooked!

Season two is almost over and I am so lost on most of what is happening in the show but can’t stop watching.  So I did what any reasonable, over the age of 35 person would do. I ran out to Target and bought season 1 and spent the entire weekend watching Pretty Little Liars! All I can think of is who is A? I can’t wait till season 2 ends so I can buy the second season and watch all of them and finally be all caught up. Yes I am totally addicted and loving every minute of it, me and half of the teens in America!

So you say what’s the big deal what is this show about? Well the description from the IMDB website is this “Four friends band together against an anonymous foe who threatens to reveal their darkest secrets, whilst unraveling the mystery of the murder of their best friend” (IMDB.com). The show is about four teens who’s friend is murdered all the while they are being harassed by a stranger with the initial A. A knows all of their and their families secrets. So while they are trying to solve the mystery of who killed Alison they are dodging threats from A and working hard to uncover who A is before it’s too late.

If you find yourself needing a good thriller series that appeals to all ages and want to get caught up in the craze. Do yourself a favor rent season 1 of Pretty Little Liars or watch on television for free. Warning, this show is addicting and you can’t watch just one episode!

Movie Review Fracture Starring Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling

So I was channel surfing the other day and came upon a movie with Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling called Fracture. I was immediately sucked into the movie due to the fact that I love Ryan Gosling and any movie starring Anthony Hopkins is usually a really good movie. This movie was made in 2007 and I have never heard of it before but it is definitely a thriller from the get go. IMDB describes the movie as “An attorney intent on climbing the career ladder toward success, finds an unlikely opponent in a manipulative criminal he’s trying to prosecute”(IMDB.com).

The plot of the movie is that Anthony Hopkins is a brilliant engineer, charged with attempted murder of his wife who is currently in a coma. Ryan Gosling is the state appointed prosecutor who is up against Hopkins who decides to defend himself. As the movie unravels Gosling begins to question if Hopkins is guilty and is torn with his duty to prosecute and his doubts of whether Hopkins is a murderer or a victim.

I highly recommend this movie it is an old one but a good one. If you are a fan of Ryan Gosling and Anthony Hopkins you will enjoy this movie. There are a lot of really good twists and turns and it keeps you guessing till the end.

Movie Review For The Help.

I finally saw the movie the Help a few weeks back and I have to say that it was probably one of the best movies that I have seen in a long time.  When I watched this movie I was absolutely, astonished at how people behaved and it was really sad and heartbreaking to watch. The way society acted as a whole back then is so different than it is today. It was a huge eye opener for me someone born in the 1970’s who has never experienced segregation.

This movie takes place in the 1960’s in the south during the civil rights movement. It centers around an aspiring writer and maids who are going through major hardships working for white women and their children. The movie stars Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Sissy Spacek and Octavia Spencer. This movie brought me to tears of joy and happiness. There are many funny and engaging parts of this movie. The acting was very convincing and I highly recommend this movie to everyone.

Movie Review for The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone

I watched this movie starring Helen Mirren called The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone. This movie is set in the 1950’s where Helen Mirren plays the part of an aging stage actress who is married to a very weatlhy husband. While en route to vacation in Rome with her husband after a very disastrous play her husband suffers a heart attack and dies. She decides to stay in Rome and finds herself friends with the seedy Contessa played very well by Anne Bancroft.

The contessa introduces her to young gigolos and she starts a very tumultuous affair with a  much younger Italian played by Olivier Martinez. The Contessa and the gigolos use her for her money but she falls in love with her young lover. She also has a very mysterious poor young man that follows her throughout the movie. This adds mystery to the movie and keeps you guessing as to who he is and what he wants from her.

This movie is very sensual and the love scenes are very passionate. There is something delightful in the pairing of a much older actress to a younger man. This is a rated R movie and meant for mature audiences only. The acting of Ms. Helen Mirren and Anne Bancroft was excellent and I enjoyed this movie very much. So pour yourself some wine, light some candles and enjoy this delicious movie.

Movie Review the Caller Starring Rachelle Lefevre

I am a lover of movies of all kinds but I generally enjoy a good scary/thriller movie. I grew up in the era of bad but classic horror movies like Halloween, Friday the 13th etc but I do not like the slasher type of movie. I prefer ones with a story like a haunting or crank callers who are calling from inside the house type of plot lol. So I came across this movie on Showtime called The Caller starring Rahcelle Lefevre. She is not a well known actress but she was in Twilight and so I decided to watch it.

The movie is centered around the main character of Mary Kee. She is a young divorcee who moves into this old apartment building and starts receiving weird phone calls from an older lady named Mary. Mary becomes very demanding and insists that the two of them become friends. Mary Kee agrees to the friendship until the lady reveals she is calling from the past. This spooks Mary Kee and she decides to break off the friendship when Mary on the phone admits to killing her boyfriend. Mary becomes angry and takes revenge out on Mary Kee. Mary is psycho and has access to Mary Kee and her family when Mary Kee is a child, since she lives in the past. So anything that Mary does to her as a child will effect her in the future day.

This movie totally freaked me out I have to admit it, I was totally into it and it really is a true thriller movie. I liked that it was not your typical movie and that it had to do with dealing with the past and the present. I have never in my whole life been afraid of an old lady before, the actress that played Mary did an excellent job although you never really see her face. She did a very convincing act and her voice is creepy. If you like movies that are scary and have a thriller mystery to it then you will enjoy this movie. The  supporting cast in the movie was good as well, Stephen Moyer starred in this for any of you True Blood fans.

So next time you are on Netflicks or going to a movie rental place pick up a copy of The Caller.

Movie Review for Jolene

I saw a very intriguing movie the other day on Showtime called Jolene. I missed the first half of the movie but I became very enthralled with the storyline. The movie was directed by Dan Ireland based on the novel from E.L. Doctorow’s novel “Jolene: A-Life”. This movie follows the life of an orphaned girl Jolene who travels the span of ten years of her life ages 15 to 25 moving cross-country experiencing life, love and major heartbreak.

The movie stars Jessica Chastain. I liked her acting and she has a very unique and classic look. She has the essence of an old Hollywood movie star and I can see her act in period pieces very well. The movie’s dialogue at best is mediocre but the acting from the stars in the movie like Francis Fisher, Chazz Palminteri, Dermot Mulroney, and Michael Vartan are phenomenal.

The movie is very quirky with a lot of sexual references and adult themes. So if you are offended easy or don’t like that you will not like this movie. This movie takes on very extreme and sometimes disturbing storylines. It deals with Jolene making bad choices, choosing the wrong men and learning to survive at any costs. Sometimes the character made me upset when she always went with a man to save her instead of leaning on herself. She did learn to finally make it on her own but not until after she made a lot of mistakes and experienced many bad relationships and choices. She was a victim in a lot of circumstances and she was forced into some things she would not have done otherwise. The movie travels over a ten year period and you see her change and evolve with every new city.

I like movies that are outside the box and not your usual story line that you see in all movies. The main character did things I would never do but it was entertaining to see her character be uninhibited. The interactions with her and the other movie characters and her effect on them, was also very interesting.

I recommend this movie Jolene that came out in 2008. It is available on Net flicks and on some cable channels right now. Jessica Chastain can also be seen in The Help, The Tree of Life and a slew of new movies for 2012. I have not seen her other movies but plan to rent them now since I am a new fan of hers. Jessica Chastain I predict will be a break out star for 2012.
